Many people have questioned the accuracy of Jeremiah's prophecy about a year period during which Babylon would dominate Judah and hold Jews as captives in Babylon. These questions, in my opinion, are based on a mistaken belief that the captivity was supposed to last 70 years. My response is in three parts:. Jeremiah makes it clear that Babylon's domination of Judah would include a captivity during which Jews would be taken as captives to Babylon. But Jeremiah never said that the captivity itself would last 70 years.

However, even though there are decisive dates and battles that mark its demise, the Assyrian Empire came to an end over a span of time rather than all at once. The end of the Assyrian Empire unfolded largely during the reign of Josiah, and his death in occurred as the Assyrian Empire was breathing its last. So in a real sense the era of the reign of Josiah marked the transition between these two empires. At that time the Assyrian Empire was at its peak. Esarhaddon had been an especially capable ruler, not only stabilizing the eastern frontiers of the Empire, but finally succeeding in subjugating Egypt BC.
Jeremiah, left behind in a desolate city by the Babylonian captors, asked some pointed questions. How did it happen that a city once full of people, visited by kings and queens of other nations, now lay desolate and empty? There was no echo of people calling in its streets. Anything of value now rested in other homes, in other temples.
According to the Bible, King David reigned over a large territory and his son Solomon over an even larger one. After the death of King Solomon, the kingdom was divided in two. The southern kingdom consisted only of the tribes of Judah and Benjamin and thus became the kingdom of Judah, with Jerusalem as its capital. The northern kingdom consisted of the remaining tribes and was called Israel.
